Joyce Kauffman is a main character in the Frasier-based fan fiction spin-off Crane Life.
Joyce is a highly opinionated and often mean spirited businesswoman with a lengthy history of failed marriages. She first appears mid-way through Season 4 as the new manager of Mead Psychiatry following Andrew Sharp's sudden resignation. Although Joyce is initially friendly to the staff, she quickly abandons this work ethic when she sees it will get her nowhere with her new colleagues. Joyce quickly develops a crush on Dr. Niles Crane, creating awkward tension between them and annoying Daphne Moon. Towards the end of Season 5, Joyce embarks on a brief fling with Daphne's dense brother Simon. In Season 6, Joyce is unexpectedly fired as manager for revealing too much private information regarding employee dismissals. When Dr. Liz Winters is temporarily hired as her replacement, Joyce is able to remain at the practice as her receptionist. When Liz returns to her original status, Joyce makes it her goal to ruin her, but Liz ultimately departs the station on her own terms. Early in Season 7, Joyce departs the practice after winning a raffle, and settles down for a new life in Hawaii. Joyce is not seen again until the end of Season 10, when she engages in a tryst with Dr. Wes Ford, a psychiatrist from her former workplace in Hawaii on a conference. Seeing her former colleagues inspires Joyce to return to Chicago at the start of Season 11. When Edith Beaumont turns down her request for a job, Joyce refuses to give up and opens her own salon across the street from the practice. At the end of the series, Joyce laments the closure of the practice, as it means she will lose a lot of her regulars.
